Tax Freedom Day

The Tax Freedom Day represents an abstract divide that separates each year into two parts. The first part - the length of time spent working to pay all taxes (including mandatory social and health insurance), and the second part - the length of time spent on making money that we actually get to keep after all the taxes have been paid. In other words, the Tax Freedom Day is the day when we begin to make money for ourselves, instead of working only for the government. We commemorate it publicly since 2000. In this form, the Day informs the citizens about the tax level in their country. In 2001, the total tax level plus the mandatory insurance was 43% GDP. Such a level of taxation, if expressed in the terms of a fraction of one year, corresponds to the period from January 1st through June 6th. The Tax Freedom Day in the Czech Republic in 2001 was therefore celebrated on June 7th.
